- Try short horizontal and vertical motions.
- After every successful slide, retest the other sides.

Avoid pulling at the box with fingernails, knives or metal tools. If a panel stops, another component may still be blocking it. Wood can also expand slightly in humid conditions, making a normally smooth movement feel tighter.

A handmade puzzle box should be treated as both a mechanism and a piece of decorative woodwork. Keep it away from radiators, strong sunlight, damp rooms and sudden changes in temperature. Excessively dry air may shrink components, while moisture can make them swell.
Dust the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Unless the maker provides different instructions, avoid soaking the box, spraying it with household cleaner or adding oil to the sliding parts. An unsuitable finish can stain the veneer, attract dirt or alter the precise fit of the mechanism.
