It was eventually attributed to the Reverend Henry Augustus Loveday, a British composer living in India. Endgame studies
These typically ask White to win or draw from a carefully constructed position. They often resemble real endings but contain unusually precise ideas, including stalemate resources, promotions, and long tactical maneuvers.
Helpmates and selfmates
In a helpmate, both sides cooperate to produce a mating position. In a selfmate, White forces Black to deliver checkmate. These forms turn normal competitive assumptions upside down.
