In Aotearoa New Zealand, Māori string games are known as whai. They formed part of a wider world of recreation, performance, teaching, and storytelling. These activities also included puppetry, dance, music, spinning tops, and stilts.

In Arctic communities, string figures have been documented among several Inuit peoples. The Copper Inuit name ajarautit is one of many local terms recorded by researchers. Figures could portray animals, human activities, and features of a world understood through close observation.
These were not merely copies of European cat’s cradle. They belonged to distinct local repertoires with their own movements and names. A Smithsonian collection object from the Mushuaunnuat of Labrador, acquired in 1929, also demonstrates that string play was recognized as part of Indigenous gaming traditions in northern North America.
In Japan, string figures are widely known as ayatori. Many people encounter them as children, learning by watching another person’s fingers and copying each movement. Familiar patterns can be performed alone, while takeover forms encourage cooperation between two players.
This method of learning is one reason string games travel so well. Players do not necessarily need a written manual or even a shared language. One person demonstrates; another imitates. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, anthropologists began documenting string figures on a large scale. Caroline Furness Jayne’s 1906 book String Figures and How to Make Them included hundreds of illustrations, while Kathleen Haddon’s Cat’s Cradle in Many Lands appeared in 1911.
These publications preserved many constructions, but historical records must be read carefully. Collectors did not always record who taught a figure, how its name should be pronounced, when it was performed, or what it meant to its makers. A diagram may preserve the movements while losing the story surrounding them.
Modern documentation increasingly recognizes that string figures are not anonymous curiosities. They belong to people, families, languages, and communities.
